Between June and December, large numbers of Southern Right whales visit Walker Bay. Adults and calves can be sighted from the many viewing points along the Hermanus cliff paths. Boat-based whale watching is offered from Hermanus, where you can get within a few meters of the whales. The Whale Show, a unique whale and dolphin audio-visual presentation, runs twice daily at the Whale Museum. Definitely worthwhile, and provides detailed and fascinating information on our gentle giants.
The beaches of Hermanus are superb, and a succession of safe areas for bathing between Kleinrivier Lagoon and Kamma Baai. These include Voëlklip, which has protected grassy terraces where you can picnic while watching the gentle surf. Grotto Beach, which stretches all the way to the mouth of the Kleinrivier Lagoon and Langbaai, a secluded cove which is regarded as the secret beach of Hermanus. There are some excellent tidal pools for the kids, notably Fick’s Pool in Westcliff and the marine tidal pool.

Seals, Dolphins, various marine birds and even Bryde’s Whales may be spotted on the way to the African (Jackass) Penguin Colony.

The Old Harbour Museum (national monument) Collection of historic photographs of Hermanus at Fisherman’s Village Museum. Features displays on whales and history of whaling and local fishing industry. During the whale season, you can see the whale crier & sonar buoy which transmits sounds made by whales.
The mountains round about Hermanus are legendary for their beautiful trails and the wealth of Fynbos and birds which flourish in this still area. Fernkloof Nature Reserve situated on the mountains above the town, has a few self-guided trails and great views of the sea from its highest point, Aasvoëlkop, 824 metres above sea level.
Hermanus overlooks the deep waters of Walker Bay where over 150 southern right whales take over the waters between June and December each year. Among numerous vantage points for whale watching on land, the 10km Cliff Path, which tracks the edge of Walker Bay is highly recommended.
The World renowned Hermanus Magnetic Observatory, where the effects of the Sun’s actions on the Earth’s Magnetic Field is monitored, is close by. They offer incredible insights into the effects and changes in the earth’s magnetism occurring daily.
